This iconic hike takes you along one of Madeira’s most famous levadas, a stunning route that winds through the heart of the UNESCO-listed Laurissilva Forest. Walk beneath lush green canopies, where light and shadow create a magical atmosphere in one of the oldest laurel forests in the world.

Along the way, you’ll pass through hand-carved basalt tunnels and follow flowing irrigation channels known locally as Levada do Furado, a true example of traditional island craftsmanship. Keep an eye out for native wildlife and, with a bit of luck, trout swimming in the crystal-clear waters.

The trail opens up to spectacular viewpoints over Porto da Cruz and the striking Penha d’Águia rock formation before ending in Portela, where you can relax and enjoy a traditional Poncha.
